Oregonians are gathering signatures at a pace that should terrify every politician who thinks they can tax people without their consent.
The "No Tax Oregon" movement is collecting 170 to 180 signatures every single day against Governor Tina Kotek's transportation bill. Petitioners believe they already have the required number with a full month left before the December 30 deadline.
This is what peaceful noncompliance looks like in action.
They Knew You Would Oppose It
Governor Kotek waited nearly the full 30 business days to sign the bill. A former Democratic state senator admitted to media that "It's really not in her best interest to give her opponents any more time than absolutely necessary."
Think about that for a second.
They knew the people would reject this. So they gamed the system to limit your ability to fight back. That's not representation. That's manipulation.
The bill raises the gas tax by six cents, doubles vehicle registration fees from $43 to $85, and increases title fees from $77 to $216. It also doubles the payroll tax for public transit. Over 10 years, this extracts $4.3 billion from working families.
The Real Numbers Tell the Story
Polling shows 86% of likely Oregon voters would sign a petition to reject these taxes. Another 67% would vote to repeal them.
Those numbers are not marginal. That's an overwhelming majority saying no to government overreach.
More than 2,000 volunteers have joined this effort. As of November 19, they had gathered over 45,000 signatures. One petitioner captured why people are angry: "It's too big of a tax. It's going to push some of us into homelessness. We just can't keep affording all this stuff."
These are not professional activists. These are regular people who are done being compliant.
They Can't Manage What They Already Have
Here's what makes this even worse.
In January 2024, an ice storm hit Oregon. Streets and freeways became skating rinks. ODOT had cut services and materials for road maintenance by 15%. An ODOT spokesperson admitted roads they were trying to plow four times a day would "really probably only going to get plowed once a day."
An independent review found ODOT mired in cost overruns, staff turnover, and outdated systems that have "eroded trust with elected leaders."
So they mismanage the money they have. They fail to maintain basic services. Then they demand more from families who are already struggling.
State Senator Bruce Starr said it clearly: "At every turn, (Kotek) chose to protect a broken status quo that raises costs on struggling families while failing to fix the structural problems that created this crisis."
This Is Bigger Than Oregon
What you're seeing in Oregon is happening everywhere. Americans are waking up to the fact that their representatives don't represent them anymore.
The establishment thought they could just ram this through and everyone would roll over. But that's not how this works when you push free-thinking Americans too far.
Oregon's ballot initiative process dates back to 1902 and became known as the Oregon System. It requires signatures equal to 4% of votes cast for governor. This is direct democracy in action. This is citizens using every constitutional tool they have to fight back.
The petition gatherers understand something the average person watching from the sidelines doesn't get yet. This is about more than a transportation bill. This is about whether you still have a say in how you're governed and taxed.
The Media Question Nobody's Asking
Here's what you need to pay attention to.
Why is the media trying to paint this citizen movement as a bad thing when it clearly has massive support? What are they protecting?
Most of the media reporting on this works for the same group trying to ram this bill through. They are not acting in good faith. They have an agenda.
When you have to gather signatures just to get a say in how you're being taxed, that tells you everything about who's really in charge. And it's not the people.
What This Means for You
The success of this petition drive signals a broader rejection of taxation without proper representation. People are realizing nobody else is going to fight for them.
These folks are out there every day, in the cold, gathering signatures because they understand the system is rigged against them. They're using every constitutional tool available instead of just complaining on social media.
That's the difference between being awake and being asleep.
Governor Kotek and politicians like her see citizens as cattle. They think they're above you and don't have to consider your grievances. This movement is proving them wrong.
When the people say "enough is enough" and actually do something about it, that's when real change becomes possible.
Oregon is showing the rest of America what happens when you stop asking for permission and start taking your power back.
